Hack For Good Will Create Charitable Solution in a Day

By James Hayes

Event aims to bring together some of Winchester’s best digital brains to develop a new and original charity-themed solution from scratch.

An ethical digital agency has announced a charity-themed hack day to bring together creative people, developers, designers, any kind of makers, to create technology for social good.

Winchester-based Studio Republic – which focuses on working with charities, non-profit organisations and ethical businesses – has invited the public to vote of the theme for ‘Hack For Good’ by through an online poll.

The four options are based on creating something for social good with applicability to charitable endeavour are ‘Improve charity impact demonstration’, ‘Global water issues’, ‘Online accessibility’, and ‘Digital homelessness services’.

To ensure that they have got sufficient space to work the Studio republic tech team will move out of their office for the day and use more spacious surroundings offered by the University of Winchester. Students of the University will also be entering a student team to take on the chosen subject on the day.

In addition to the student team, other digital agencies from the local area will also be taking part in Hack for Good. Members of The Bot PlatformHinge, and Rareloop will be sending teams to design, build and create something by Hack For Good’s conclusion.

“It’ll be great to get the local creative industry together for a day, and make something for the greater good,” said Chris Todhunter, Director at Studio Republic. “We are all about being creative for good, so to get other agencies involved in this idea has been a goal of ours for a while. A hack day is the perfect opportunity for this. We’re all excited to see what we can come up with in only a few hours.”

Studio Republic will announce the vote winning theme in the next few weeks, giving teams time to start preparations for what they could create on 10th August. In the lead up to, and on the day itself, you’ll be able to follow Hack for Good’s progress on social media using the hashtag #HackForGood. Studio Republic will be posting progress photos and other updates during the event.

Studio republic’s charitable sector clients include Step By StepSailors’ Society, and ChildHope.
